"Food noise" isn't a clinical term, but it describes something specific that patients report with striking consistency: an intrusive, repetitive background stream of thoughts about food that runs independently of hunger.
It isn't the same as hunger
Hunger is a physiological signal tied to energy status. Food noise persists after meals, shows up when you're full, and is much more closely related to reward anticipation than to caloric need.
The reward pathway
Highly palatable food engages dopaminergic reward circuitry. With repeated exposure, cues associated with that food — time of day, a location, an emotional state — begin triggering anticipation on their own. The anticipation is the noise.
Why GLP-1s quiet it
GLP-1 receptors are present not only in the gut but in brain regions involved in reward processing, including the nucleus accumbens. This is the likely explanation for an effect that patients describe as qualitatively different from feeling full.

What this means for how we talk about weight
If someone is managing a constant intrusive signal and someone else isn't, comparing their dietary adherence as though it reflects character is not just unkind — it's inaccurate. The workload is genuinely different.
That reframing matters clinically. Patients who understand food noise as physiology rather than weakness engage with treatment differently, and they are considerably less likely to quit when a week goes badly.
